Following in the rankings was <strong>Tesla<\/strong> with 313,400 units in the United States. Globally, Tesla sold 936,172 units in 2021 (up 87.4% from 2020). The latter was able to surpass all other premium\/luxury brands, such as <strong>Lexus<\/strong> (304,475 units sold), <strong>Mercedes-Benz<\/strong> (276,102 units sold) or even <strong>Audi<\/strong> (196,038 units sold), thanks to strong production and sales growth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Due to very strong demand and the upcoming start of production in Texas, Tesla should continue to grow rapidly. Overall, <strong>about 2.2 million premium\/luxury vehicles were sold in 2021 in the U.S.<\/strong> (about 14.7 percent of the total.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to a <em><strong>Bloomberg<\/strong><\/em> report, BMW is trying to combat the automotive industry&#8217;s chip shortage and is doing a better job of it than its rivals. In fact, the automaker reported a 21 percent increase in car sales, while Mercedes grew less than 1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The automotive sector has been plagued by semiconductor shortages since the start of the global pandemic. According to the report, BMW&#8217;s performance in 2021 was helped by <strong>the company&#8217;s decision to maintain its semiconductor orders<\/strong>. The report quotes <strong>Pieter Nota<\/strong>, a member of BMW&#8217;s board of directors, as saying that the chip shortage will continue over the next few months and may not ease until later this year. The report also said<strong> Toyota<\/strong> surpassed <strong>General Motors<\/strong> to become the top seller in the U.S. because it was able to adapt to the setback.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A rise in demand for electric vehicles<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BMW also expects demand to rise after <strong>the launch of the iX electric sedan this year<\/strong>, according to Bloomberg. This model will compete with Tesla cars and tap <strong>into the growing electric vehicle market<\/strong>.\u00a0Nota also said that demand for electric vehicles is growing rapidly and that <strong>BMW aims to sell 2,00,000 electric vehicles in 2022<\/strong>, up from 1,00,000 e-vehicles sold in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In companies such as <strong>Volkswagen<\/strong> and <strong>Porsche<\/strong>, the demand for electric vehicles has seen an increase in 2021. As an example, Porsche&#8217;s <em><strong>Taycan<\/strong><\/em> model doubled its electric vehicle sales in 2021, the report added.
