Facebook<\/strong> is already one step ahead of its potential competitors. The company founded by Mark Zuckerberg<\/strong> has also opted for a new name, Meta<\/strong>, a subtle reference to its new strategic priority<\/strong>. Start-ups<\/strong> and even video games<\/strong> such as Roblox<\/strong> and Fortnite<\/strong> have been quick to jump on the bandwagon. “There are likely to be several metavers, a multitude of experiences available at several points<\/em>,” says Nicolas Reffait<\/strong>, partner in charge of media at BearingPoint<\/strong>. “It’s not the way things are supposed to be if there is only one metaverse that carries all the experiences. By its very nature, we cannot imagine that it can be owned<\/em>“.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Facebook’s<\/strong> ambition is to establish itself as the creator of a universal digital reference space<\/strong>, as the search engine Google<\/strong> was in its day. To achieve this, the group plans to invest several tens of billions of dollars each year<\/strong> in the project and to hire 10,000 people in Europe within five years.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Other companies have followed suit and are embarking on the metaverse adventure in their own way. Microsoft<\/strong> aims to develop “Mesh<\/em><\/strong>“, a new feature in the Teams<\/strong> software<\/strong> that will allow people to appear as personalised avatars<\/strong> instead of activating the video during 2022. Nvidia<\/strong>, the processor champion, has already launched “Omniverse<\/em><\/strong>“, which will allow teams to collaborate in real time in a shared virtual space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Video games<\/strong> are also trying to take advantage of this new digital development opportunity. Fortnite<\/strong> and Minecraft<\/strong> had already taken advantage of the pandemic<\/strong> to become entertainment platforms<\/strong> where players could lead a social life<\/strong> in parallel to reality, to the point of upsetting the hegemony<\/strong> of social networks. Fortnite<\/strong> and its publisher Epic Games<\/strong> are among the most advanced, and have already offered virtual concerts<\/strong> by Travis Scott<\/strong> or Zara Larsson<\/strong> followed by tens of millions of people. “This is an incredible opportunity to connect with a younger audience. It’s really the future<\/em>,” said the Swedish pop singer.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The latest force trying to expand into the metaverse<\/strong> is start-ups<\/strong>. In South Korea<\/strong>, for example, a coalition<\/strong> of start-ups and public institutions<\/strong> has been formed under the leadership of the Ministry of Science<\/strong> to avoid “dependency on transnational players<\/em>“.
