An iconic tradition that goes back much further than one might think.<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"89\" data-end=\"317\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"636\">\n<p data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"636\"><strong>At the beginning of the 20th century, clock precision was vital for sailors<\/strong>. <strong>\u201cTime balls\u201d<\/strong>\u2014visual spheres dropped at fixed hours\u2014allowed ships in port to adjust their chronometers.<strong> Inspired by this concept, the founder of <em data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"560\">The New York Times<\/em><\/strong> came up with the idea of<strong> creating his own ball to celebrate New Year\u2019s Eve<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"636\">\n<h2 data-start=\"638\" data-end=\"652\">Since 1907<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"654\" data-end=\"1084\">The <strong>first drop<\/strong> took place on the <strong>night of December 31st, 1907, ringing in 1908<\/strong>. <strong>The ball, simple and sturdy, was made of wood and iron, weighed about 317 kg<\/strong>, and was lit by <strong>100 bulbs<\/strong>. At the time, the event was both a technical feat and <strong>a chance to bring crowds together in a rapidly growing city<\/strong>. Since that first edition,<strong> the \u201cBall Drop\u201d has become an annual ritual<\/strong>, interrupted only during wartime due to lighting restrictions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"654\" data-end=\"1084\">\n<p data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1626\"><strong>Over the decades, the ball has undergone numerous transformations<\/strong>. Measuring almost <strong>3.7 meters in diameter and weighing 5.4 tons<\/strong>, the ball is now a masterpiece at the crossroads of craftsmanship and innovation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1626\">\n<p data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1878\"><strong>Each modernization adds a touch of poetry and grandeur<\/strong>.
