Announced at the end of 2024, the increase in customs duties on clothing imports into Mexico is making life more difficult for the many American brands that used to pass through the country to avoid taxes on their territory.<\/h4>\n

Mexico<\/strong> wants to protect its clothing industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Threatened by Donald Trump with a 25% tariff hike on all imports from the country, Mexico is also deploying countermeasures against globalization<\/strong>…and in particular against competition from Chinese players in the minis-price fashion sector.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On December 19, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum<\/strong> signed a decree to further tax textile imports until 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to Marcelo Ebrard <\/strong>, Mexico’s Secretary of the Economy, <\/strong>this measure is intended to combat the import of products sold at \u201cincredibly low\u201d prices<\/strong>. It targets \u201cspecific categories\u201d of products.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Circumvention of trade rules<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Additional customs duties of 35%<\/strong> will apply to the import of 138 ready-to-wear products, and 15% to 17 types of textile goods<\/strong>, said Marcelo Ebrard.<\/p>\n
