Hedi Slimane<\/strong><\/b> leaves Celine, Michael Rider<\/strong><\/b> arrives.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Over the past few months, the entire fashion world has agreed that relations between the LVMH<\/strong><\/b> group’s Maison and Hedi Slimane, its all-powerful artistic and image director since January 2018<\/strong><\/b>, were hanging by a thread.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It’s now confirmed.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In a press release issued on the morning of October 2, the day after its runway show (captured on video) at Paris Fashion Week, Celine announced the designer’s departure.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n In a second press release, issued on the afternoon of October 2, Celine revealed the name of its replacement, as of January 2025, namely American Michael Rider<\/strong><\/b>, theformer creative director of Polo Ralph Lauren<\/strong><\/b>.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n He will be \u201cresponsible for the creative direction of the<\/strong><\/b> House’swomen’s and men’s collections<\/strong><\/b>, including ready-to-wear, leather goods, accessories and couture<\/strong><\/b>\u201d. The title makes no reference to image, which was part of Hedi Slimane’s job title.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Michael Rider is no stranger to the world of Celine. The designer, unknown to the general public, spent ten years, from 2008 to 2018, as design creator at Celine under Phoebe Philo<\/strong><\/b>. When Hedi Slimane took over, he moved back across the Atlantic to head up design at Polo Ralph Lauren. Since the end of May, he had left this position and was available for new adventures.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A graduate of Brown University, he began his career in fashion at Balenciaga, working alongside Nicolas Ghesqui\u00e8re.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Severine Merle, C\u00e9line’s CEO<\/strong><\/b>, said she was \u201c delighted to welcome Michael to C\u00e9line, a house he knows intimately.<\/strong><\/b> Michael’s vision, creative talent, authentic nature and close connection to the C\u00e9line heritage make him a natural choice to continue building lasting success for the house.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cCeline is a house whose values are very dear to me<\/strong><\/b> and which has a great heritage to build on,\u201d commented Michael Rider.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The announcement put an end to speculation<\/strong><\/b> as to who would succeed Hedi Slimane at Celine.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n WWD had hit the nail on<\/strong><\/b> the head with Michael Rider. The names of Pierpaolo Piccioli,<\/strong><\/b> who has just left Valentino, Kim Jones (Fendi and Dior Homme), Riccardo Tisci (ex Givenchy and Burberry)<\/strong><\/b> and…Virginie Viard, former artistic director of Chanel<\/strong><\/b>, were also circulating…<\/p>\n <\/p>\n As for Hedi Slimane’s departure, it comes as no surprise. According to the specialized media, the break-up was imminent, as Hedi Slimane’s relationship with his owner had deteriorated in recent months.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But LVMH is not ungrateful for the split.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In a press release, Celine hails its \u201cexceptional growth\u201d and its affirmation as \u201can essential French fashion house\u201d, \u201cunder the artistic and creative direction\u201d of Hedi Slimane.<\/strong><\/b> His \u201cholistic vision,<\/strong><\/b> exacting standards and rigor have enabled Celine to redesign its codes <\/strong><\/b>while reaffirming its feminine and Parisian roots\u201d, the press release stresses. He has also remarkably enriched the house’s territories of expression in men’s silhouettes, couture and haute parfumerie<\/strong><\/b>. The extraordinary road we have travelled together over the last seven years makes Celine a house with formidable foundations for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Indeed, after six years, Hedi Slimane is not leaving Celine in the state he found it.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Admittedly, the House founded in 1946 by C\u00e9line Vipiana and bought by LVMH in 1987<\/strong><\/b>, had already been revitalized under the scissors of Phoebe Philo<\/strong><\/b>, from 2008 to the end of 2017.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But under the leadership of Hedi Slimane<\/strong><\/b> and his \u201cholistic\u201d approach, the House really took off.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The designer has overseen a number of major firsts<\/strong><\/b>at Celine, including the 2019 launch of menswear and haute parfumerie collections<\/strong><\/b>, followed by \u201chaute couture\u201d pieces<\/strong><\/b>, and since last March, the launch of a cosmetics linewith a <\/strong><\/b>sophisticated lipstick. Between 2018 and 2022, sales doubled to 2 billion euros<\/strong><\/b>. By 2023, it will even reach 2.6 billion euros, according to HSBC<\/strong><\/b>. This would make it LVMH’s third-largest fashion house after Louis Vuitton and Dior, ahead of Fendi.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before deploying his global approach at Celine, Hedi Slimane had already made a splash at another Lvmh Maison, Dior Homme from 2000 to 2007, then within the Kering group, at .Saint Laurent Paris, from 2012 to 2016.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n After Kering and LVMH, is Hedi Slimane set to make his mark at a third major luxury group, Chanel?<\/strong><\/b> Will he indeed join the Maison de la rue Cambon<\/strong><\/b>, as rumors suggest ?<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n But while some of the suspense surrounding Hedi Slimane’s destiny may have been dispelled, the next step is still shrouded in mystery…<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Contrary to expectations, the latest Chanel fashion show on October 1 did not reveal the successor to Virginie Viard, who left the company last June.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Chanel’s owners, Alain and G\u00e9rard Wertheimer<\/strong><\/b>, were reported to have displayed their usual phlegm and silence at this latest show… and we’ll probably<\/strong><\/b> have to wait longer than we’d hoped<\/strong><\/b>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The studio’s<\/strong><\/b> critically-acclaimed silhouettes for Spring-Summer 2025<\/strong><\/b> have shown that it is possible to do without a creative headliner for at least an interim period.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n This could be just the thing, as Hedi Slimane is known for not putting all his passions in the same basket. In addition to fashion, the designer is passionate about photography (as was the late Karl Lagerfeld) and music.<\/strong><\/b> And it’s said that he usually takes a sabbatical before changing Maison.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n However, according to H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Guillaume, fashion journalist at Le Figaro<\/strong><\/b>, his holistic profile is not necessarily to the taste of Chanel’s owners.<\/strong><\/b> And the 56-year-old designer’s<\/strong><\/b> legendary bad temper<\/strong><\/b> (he also left Saint Laurent on bad terms) may also give his future employers pause for thought.
