Exclusive interview.<\/h4>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the facade of the H\u00f4tel de Saint-Aignan, one of the most beautiful private mansions in the Marais, the poster stands out, immense, magnificent, presenting the exhibition &#8220;Salonika, Jerusalem of the Balkans, 1870-1920, the Pierre de Gigord donation.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mahj.org\/fr\/programme\/salonique-jerusalem-des-balkans-1870-1920-la-donation-pierre-de-gigord-30743\">Salonika, Jerusalem of the Balkans, 1870-1920<\/a>. Without this donation of 370 photographs and documents to the Museum of Jewish Art and History (MahJ), this exhibition would not exist.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pierre de Gigord, a great traveler, passionate about the Orient, has led a multifaceted life. A graduate of the National School of Decorative Arts, he was visionary in creating a bohemian hippie fashion trend in the 1970s, based on imported pieces from India and Turkey. He created several chains of clothing and jewelry stores (Anastasia, Diwali&#8230;) in France and abroad, where stars of the time came to dress &#8230; and have tea.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"min-h-[20px] text-message flex flex-col items-start gap-3 whitespace-pre-wrap break-words [.text-message+&amp;]:mt-5 overflow-x-auto\" data-message-author-role=\"assistant\" data-message-id=\"1c060218-9fa7-48e0-aaf9-42660cd2894b\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert dark\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_19096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19096\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19095\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Collection-rarissime-Pierre-de-Gigord-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cOn my small scale, in a very disorganized way, I have built up the most important collection in the world on the Ottoman Empire in forty years,&#8221; Pierre de Gigord \u00a9 Corine Moriou<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, this son of a military man collected Orientalist paintings, photographs, and documents from the Ottoman Empire. Heading an impressive collection, he became the indispensable expert-resource for researchers. It was in this context that he collaborated with historian Catherine Pinguet, a research associate at the Centre for Turkish, Ottoman, Balkan, and Central Asian Studies (CNRS and EHESS).
