To reduce the carbon footprint of their factories in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, Ferrari and Philip Morris International (PMI)<\/strong> announced on Wednesday December 13<\/strong> the creation of the Ferrari E-Lab<\/strong>. The latter aims to “identify solutions for industrial electrification in the fields of renewable energy production, storage and transformation”<\/em>, according to a press release.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The collaboration marks a further step in their long-standing strategic partnership, which began in 1973<\/strong> with the sponsorship of Ferrari’s Formula 1 team by cigarette manufacturer Marlboro.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n “On the 50th anniversary of our partnership, Ferrari and PMI share the desire to evolve their work together in a spirit of open innovation. Our companies will collaborate in the search for new technological solutions to develop and optimize the use of energy in our industrial processes,”<\/em> said Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n While Ferrari is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030<\/strong>, the Ferrari E-Lab aims to explore sustainable energy-related technological solutions. Ferrari’s first all-electric car is planned for late 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The project, centered on the Maranello and Crespellano<\/strong> production complexes, located around 30 kilometers apart in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna<\/strong>, will initially focus on the viability of long-term energy storage technologies.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The first study, expected to be completed by the end of September 2024<\/strong>, will be a crucial milestone in this innovative partnership. No operational or financial details were provided.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n “Our companies will collaborate in the search for new technological solutions to develop and optimize the use of energy in our industrial processes,”<\/em> said Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Scott Coutts<\/strong>, Vice President of Operations at PMI, also expressed his enthusiasm: “We look forward to collaborating with Ferrari as we continue to implement our three-pronged strategy and approach to decarbonization, which includes reducing fossil fuel consumption, switching to renewable energy and offsetting unavoidable emissions. We’re particularly interested in exploring the potential that industrial electrification could play in our strategy.”<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ferrari’s Maranello site employs almost 5,000 people<\/strong>, while PMI, located in Crespellano, employs over 2,000.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ferrari is currently developing a new assembly facility in Maranello called “e-building”.<\/strong> In addition, by 2022, the company plans to set up a fuel cell plant<\/strong> on this site, generating electricity without combustion and supplying 5%<\/strong> of the energy needed for production operations.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In this way, the Ferrari E-Lab represents a significant milestone in Ferrari and PMI’s joint quest for a cleaner, more environmentally-friendly automotive future.
