Any ruby that comes out of the ground and ends up exceeding five carats as a polished ruby is something rare. A 10-carat ruby is very rare. 20 carats is almost unheard of. A ruby over 50 carats is once-in-a-lifetime”<\/em>, Quig Bruning<\/strong>, head of the jewelry department for the Americas at Sotheby’s, told AFP.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n At the same auction, a rare pink diamond called “The Eternal Pink”<\/strong>, weighing 10.57 carats<\/strong> and extracted from a mine in Botswana, also sold for the same amount of $34.8 million<\/strong>.
