London-based designer George Bamford, founder of the Bamford Watch Department and partner of TAG Heuer, reveals an original edition of the Carrera Calibre 5 with a coffee dial, designed with Black Badger’s James Thompson.
This limited edition of only 20 pieces is a delight for coffee aficionados.
“We consume about two billion cups of coffee on the planet every year. For this project, we made the dials of our watches from coffee itself. You can almost smell it when you look at it,” explains jewellery designer and watchmaker James Thompson.
To make this very special dial, the designers used coffee that had been specially selected and roasted at Cafe da Matteo, a famous café in Götenberg, Sweden.
A real goldsmith’s work was carried out to pour the ground coffee into the resin and finally sublimate it by hand to enhance its nuances.
“I have always wanted to create a superb tropicalized dial, but in a modern way. Each dial has its own character. The idea of using a recycled source was just irresistible. That’s how we conceptualized this dial made from coffee beans. “says George Bamford.
It’s this uniqueness that is revealed in this 41mm diameter steel Carrera. Everything is done to exalt the coffee, right down to the strap, whose colour matches the nuances of the dial. The designers also decided to remove the hour-markers and date from the initial model to highlight the logo and brand name in gold.
With an automatic Calibre 5 movement with a 38-hour power reserve and water resistance to 100 metres, this timepiece, which is as rich in colour as it is in aroma, is available for around 6,300 euros.
