The French fashion group Kering, owner of the famous luxury ready-to-wear brand Gucci, will leave Ticino for Piedmont. Some 400 of the 800 employees are expected to lose their jobs. The information given on Wednesday by Radio-Television of Italian Switzerland RSI was confirmed by the OCST union union.

This restructuring concerns first of all the main site of Sant’Antonino and the logistics center of Bioggio, but also the 17 others scattered throughout the cantonal territory. The positions will be gradually transferred to the Piedmont region between 2020 and 2022. Most of the departures should take place in 2021.

On the other hand, the administrative unit of Cadempino would be spared. This site had already been the subject of relocation measures last October, with the departure for Italy of 150 employees.

Consequences of tax fraud at Gucci

The group employs around 800 people in Ticino. The 400 positions in the logistics sector are mainly occupied by border workers, only about fifteen employees being domiciled in Switzerland, the union said. They will be offered a relocation to the province of Novara, some 50 km west of Milan.

The decision to leave Italian Switzerland follows an investigation by the Milan public prosecutor’s office against the fashion giant. The tax fraud case at Gucci, worth around 16.4 billion francs, had recently resulted in a fine of around 1.4 billion francs for Kering.

According to RSI calculations, the departure of the group – the largest taxpayer in Ticino – should generate annual tax losses of around 50 million francs for the canton.
