Luxury perfumery: In the Gauchy factory, 40 bottles are produced per minute

Although it looks ordinary, the appearance of the Gauchy factory is not to be trusted. Indeed, it is from this small town in the Aisne that millions of bottles of luxury perfumes leave the world every year. On average, the Gauchy factory produces 40 bottles per minute.

 

Thanks to this production frequency, no less than 800 references of perfumes are produced in Gauchy. Because the factory is the mass production site for the perfumes of the luxury division of L’Oréal, the bottles of eight prestigious brands also find their source there, such as Lancôme, Yves Saint Laurent and Giorgio Armani, all three bought by L’Oréal.

 

While Gauchy is not the place where perfumes are created, it is in this small town in the Aisne that one of the most delicate operations in the production process takes place. Indeed, to obtain the precious essences, an essential oil – ordered from fragrance specialists – is mixed with water and alcohol.

 

To make sure of the dosage, the final product must be compared with a juice benchmark. “The idea is to do blind olfaction,” explains Céline Palisse. By comparing the two samples, “the objective is to try to detect whether there is a difference or not and if there is a difference, to see what it is linked to” explains the plant’s quality manager. Since the nuances of scents are sometimes very subtle and therefore complex to detect, the testers must not consume chewing gum, coffee or cigarettes, any type of consumption that could impair their olfactory capacities.

 

Because of this tightly controlled production dynamic, the Gauchy plant held its ground despite the pandemic. The site even hired a dozen people during the first containment. According to its director, Romaric Peltier, the favourable situation of the factory would be linked to its membership of the international group l’Oréal whose various houses were not affected by the health crisis to the same extent.

 

In France in particular, perfume sales fell 18% between January and the end of October compared to the same period in 2019. According to a recent study by the NPD Group, this decrease remains lower than the 22% decline recorded by the global selective beauty market. Similarly, the competitor group Interparfums – including the Jimmy Choo and Karl Lagerfeld brands – exceeded analysts’ expectations for the year 2020, benefiting from a context that was “more favorable than expected”.

 

For his part, Romaric Peltier said that the Gauchy plant can look forward to “reassuring projections” for the holiday season.
