The famous drag-queen Divine is Loewe’s new muse. With a capsule collection and an online exhibition, the Spanish luxury house wanted to pay homage to the American transformist, a popular figure and symbol of the counterculture who became a film star in the 70s.

Harris Glenn Milstead, better known as Divine, was a famous American transformist actor and singer in the 60s, 70s and 80s, who appeared in films such as Pink Flamingos, Hairspray and Lust in The Dust.

With his blond hair, his exuberant make-up and his outrageous acting that was constantly deconstructing femininity and conventions, the drag queen left his mark on LGBT culture as much as on independent cinema.

And it’s precisely because Divine has had a huge impact on popular culture that the Spanish fashion and luxury accessories house Loewe has chosen to pay tribute to him: “Divine has anticipated the glorification of trash, the mix of high and low, the fantastic smoothing of gender barriers. I thought it was time to celebrate him” said Jonathan Anderson, artistic director of the brand.

As an avant-garde and trashy figure, Divine has indeed been able to cultivate the sublime through the art of provocation and performance and contribute in her own way to shaping modern ideals such as the erasing of gender differences.

Beyond this heritage, it is his ability to fully accept himself, to be an “embodiment of self-determination” that convinced Jonathan Anderson to take him as the new muse of his collection: “He was larger than life in every sense: as a man, as a performer, as a personality and as a body” commented the artistic director. A tribute that is particularly relevant on the occasion of Pride Month.

A capsule collection and an online exhibition in his memory

To bring Divine back to life more than thirty years after its demise, the Spanish house first launched a capsule collection Loewe x Divine, inspired by its mythical looks.

A colourful collection that looks just like her with platform pumps, maxi t-shirts, miniskirts and feather-covered dresses.

Some pieces are even scratched with Divine’s face. His make-up face and his teasing pout are then displayed in XXL size on the different pop and colourful silhouettes of the collection, which is far from what the label usually offers.

A capsule full of references to the designer’s idol, although his looks will not be commercialized, except for three limited-edition T-shirts and a tote bag which are on sale on the Loewe website, with 15 % of the profits to be donated to Visual Aids, an organization that uses art to fight HIV/AIDS. An additional donation will be made to Baltimore Pride, an LGBTQ+ organization with African-American leadership, as a nod to Divine’s hometown.

The tribute doesn’t stop here: the LGBTQ+ icon will also be featured in a virtual exhibition designed by Loewe’s artistic director, which will include his iconic white dress created by Van Smith in The Neon Woman and his famous vanity, along with archives, photographs and memories photographed by legendary portraitist Greg Gorman.

A digital exhibition and a limited-edition collection to be discovered from June 25 on loewe.com, celebrating the freedom of expression and the emancipation of an icon who brilliantly blends Hollywood glamour and trash.
