Fashion and luxury’s initiatives on Earth Day 2020

Yesterday, Wednesday 22th of April, nature was honoured all over the world. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, many fashion and luxury pioneer brands committed themselves to environmental protection. Here is a list of top initiatives.

 

The fashion industry, currently one of the most polluting industries in the world, is not ignoring its ecological impact. For several years now, numerous initiatives have been flourishing, notably to reduce the clothing sector’s carbon footprint.

 

But in this half-century of World Earth Day, and in the context of a widespread epidemic crisis, raising awareness about preserving our planet has never seemed to be such an essential fight.

 

Wednesday 22nd April 2020 has thus been a day of plenty of initiatives in favour of the environment from actors in the fashion and luxury goods industries.

 

Burberry’s ethical and desirable line

 

This is the case of the English brand Burberry, which used the occasion of this fiftieth anniversary to launch the “ReBurberry Edit” line, a re-edition of 26 models from the spring-summer 2020 collection made from the latest sustainable materials.

 

The collection includes a range of bio-sourced acetate eyewear, as well as trench coats, parkas, capes and accessories made from ECONYL® fibre, a recycled nylon made from regenerated fishing nets, scraps of fabric and industrial plastics, and bags made from renewable energy.

Burberry also took this opportunity to announce the global roll-out of a brand new global labelling scheme for key product categories (consumers will be able to see all the environmental impact information on a pistachio green label) and a holistic sustainability programme: by 2022, the UK house aims to be carbon neutral and to obtain 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.

 

At the halfway point in our Responsible 2022 Strategy, we remain committed to making progress on our social and environmental goals, and our product-focused sustainability programmes are the cornerstone of this approach. We believe that positive change at every stage of our product development is critical to building a sustainable future for our industry as a whole“, said Pam Batty, Burberry’s Vice President of Corporate Responsibility, in a release.

Zero emissions and 100% renewable energy for Capri Holdings

 

Social and environmental initiatives have also been promoted by the multinational Capri Holdings Limited, whose announcement of a corporate social responsibility strategy also coincided with the half-century of Earth Day.

 

The global luxury fashion group, whose shareholders include Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo, indeed unveiled its first CSR press release on April 22, structuring it around three main angles: “Our world. Our community. Our Philanthropy.

 

The company is committed to being 100% carbon neutral in its direct operations and 100% renewable energy for its facilities by 2025. It also committed to ensuring that all plastics in its packaging are recyclable and that at least 95% of its leather is sourced from certified tanneries, while also striving to promote diversity and inclusion within the organization, as well as human rights and fair wages.

 

We are proud of the steps our company has taken to foster positive environmental and social change within our organisation and in our world” said John D Idol, president and chief executive officer of Capri Holdings.

 

Other commitments to celebrate the planet

 

Many other strong actions were taken on Earth Day to promote more ethical fashion and to highlight eco-friendly products.

 

For example, the Swiss luxury watch brand Charriol announced that it would be eliminating all single-use plastics within the next few years and Calvin Klein revealed that its legendary CK EVERYONE eau de toilette will now only use materials that meet the requirements of the “Healthy Materials Silver Level” certificate awarded by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.

 

In addition, the Italian fine jewellery house Pomellato marked its 50th anniversary by launching a new exclusive line of jewellery using only materials from 100% sustainable sources.

A green day that allowed a multitude of eco-responsible projects and showed that the world of fashion and luxury is now more than ever aware of what is at stake in sustainable and ethical fashion.

 

And it’s just the right time because, according to a study by the Stylight research platform published on 22 April, consumers are increasingly attracted to environmentally friendly labels, with products made from sustainable materials and production processes that are less harmful to the planet.
