Bentley orders rebound 50% thanks to the Chinese market

The CEO of British luxury carmaker Bentley announced that the group’s orders are up 50% compared to the same period last year, driven by Chinese buyers.

British carmaker Bentley started the year with 50 percent more orders than at the beginning of last year and built more luxury cars in January than at the same time in 2020, as China boosted demand despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, its boss told Reuters on Wednesday.

The brand, which belongs to Volkswagen, also said it did not face any major disruptions due to Britain’s exit from the European Union, nor a shortage of semiconductor chips as a result of the health crisis that has forced some carmakers to stop or reduce production.

Based in Crewe, in the north of England, Bentley had 11,206 cars sold in 2020. The company made a small profit in 2020 when its plant was forced to close as Britain announced its first national containment, and hopes to continue to do so this year.

The order book at the beginning of this year was 50% higher than at the beginning of last year,” Managing Director Adrian Hallmark said in an interview. “China, by far, is the world’s most outstanding performance in terms of the level of orders compared to normal expectations“.
