“Albania is not for sale.” For over a week, thousands of people have taken to the streets of Albania to protest the construction of a luxury hotel complex in Zvernec and on Sazan Island, within the Vjosa-Narta protected area, located on the coast southwest of Tirana, the country’s capital.
This megaproject is led by U.S. President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, and her husband, Jared Kushner. The couple had announced the project in the spring of 2024, but by the end of that same year, the Albanian government granted Atlantic Incubation Partners LLC—a company reportedly affiliated with Jared Kushner’s Affinity investment fund—the status of strategic investor. This status allows the company to benefit from expedited administrative procedures and the support of local authorities.
